Tips for reorganising your garage to enjoy more space
Some of us are finding that we have a little extra time at home these days. Why not use that time to reorganise and declutter your garage? This is a great way to make more space in your garage for the items you really want to keep. Plus, it will be much easier to find what you need! Check out some of these tips on how to organise your garage. Organising Tools Walk into any garage in your neighbourhood and you’re likely to see rakes, shovels, brooms and other large tools pushed into one corner. Luckily, there are many ways to store your large tools in a neat, organised fashion. One idea is to fashion a tool rack using PVC, wood or if you plan on being in your garage for an indefinite amount of time, steel. This creates a secure place for every large tool you own. You can even make a label to ensure everyone in your family puts tools back where they belong. Store Your Bikes Vertically If you don’t have a bike storage rack, your bike is probably taking up quite a bit of space in your garage. A solution to this problem is to store your bike vertically with a Steadyrack, which will save space with its pivot feature, allowing you to rotate your bike in the rack almost 180 degrees, sitting practically flush against the wall. This will keep your bicycles safe and secure, providing easy access to them when you want to take a ride. Creating Overhead Storage Storing helmets, locks, and other gear near the ceiling of your garage creates space for your car and other important items. One step to take is to make a storage area for your ladder near the ceiling of your garage. This is especially handy if you don’t use your ladder very often. It’s out of the way until you need it for a project. Install a Pegboard A durable pegboard is a valuable storage tool in a garage. You can hang small containers of nails, screws, nuts and more on a pegboard. Be sure to use clear containers so you can find what you want in a matter of seconds. A pegboard can also hold hammers, pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers and more. Lastly, these are just a few ideas to get you started on your efforts to organise your garage. Just imagine how much open space you’ll have for your car. Get Rid of Unwanted Items Chances are, you have clothing, books, old tools, games and more that are just taking up space in your garage. Getting rid of these items is an easy way to make more space and give some old items new life. One way to do this is to have a yard sale. You can make a little money on some items and load up unsold items for donation. Or, if you don’t want to organise a yard sale, there are some charities that pick up unwanted items right from your doorstep. Another advantage of decluttering your garage is you’re likely to find something you thought was lost forever! Install Shelves for Smaller Items Adding inexpensive shelves to your garage can help you keep track of smaller items that are easy to lose in the space. You can go with metal utility shelves or traditional wooden ones. These shelves are great for storing plastic bins full of seasonal clothing, shoes, books and more. Plastic bins are colourful, and you can put a label on each one, so you know its contents. If you want to make the process of finding things even easier, go with clear plastic bins. Go on and get organised. What are you waiting for? Dominic LoBianco is a content contributor on behalf of Shelter Logic. Dominic creates multimedia content on a wide array of topics and themes.
