In no particular order, here are our top picks for the best mountain biking destinations.
Whistler, British Columbia, Canada
A no-brainer, Whistler is a hot spot for adrenaline junkies all year round. A mountain biker's dream, there are trails to suit any level. Start your adventure at the world-class Whistler Bike Park, where you can test out your skills and work on your jumps. Once you’ve had your fill of tricks, head to the extensive natural trails and experience stunning views as you shred through the forest. We recommend planning your trip in the warmer months to take full advantage of all of the trails this bucket list park has to offer. You might even run into our favourite Canadian, Remy Metaillier.
Finale Ligure, Savona, Italy
If you’re looking for something with year-round options – then Finale Ligure is the spot for you! As there’s no snow skiing here in winter, the trails are open to riders all year. There is over 400 km of trails to explore, and with views of the stunning Mediterranean Sea, it’s not hard to see why this is a hot spot for the mountain biking community. If that’s not enough to tempt you, there’s always the promise of pizza at the end of a hard day’s riding.
Upper Buller Gorge, South Island, New Zealand
There are so many amazing trails to explore in New Zealand, including the longest single track on the South Island – Old Ghost Road. A multi-day epic adventure, this trail will have you climbing through rainforests before being treated to stunning views of the rolling hills over the tree line. This journey is an unforgettable challenge for experienced mountain bikers. Complete the adventure with an ice-cold beer at the end – cheers!
The Lake District, England, United Kingdom
A well-known hotspot for mountain biking, with some of the best landscapes in the UK. This stunning region is home to many challenging (and impressive) mountain bike routes. High mountain peaks, rocky trails, steep descents, magnificent lake views and forest paths – it’s not hard to see why the Lake District is a favourite for romantic poets and cyclists alike. After a hard day shredding through the peaks, reward yourself with a good pub meal in any of the local towns. There’s plenty for the family to enjoy off the trails as well, with galleries, fishing, kayaking and even the World of Beatrix Potter – it’s the perfect family holiday location.
Moab, Utah, United States of America
If you’re looking for something a little more DRAMATIC then look no further than the red rock canyons of Utah. The varied scenery and terrain make this a trip you won’t soon forget. Offering both highly technical trails, and more scenic routes there are many adventures to be had in Moab. With a good selection of beginner trails, this can be a great choice for a family trip as well. Summer gets very hot here, so it’s best to plan your trip for the milder months.
Dwellingup, Western Australia, Australia
We had to round out the list with a local favourite! Dwellingup is home to a 35-kilometre network of purpose-built single-track MTB trails and offers riders a stunning experience with a variety of trails – so there’s something for everyone. If the unique flora and fauna aren’t enough to tempt you to this part of the world, trail names like ‘busted nuts’, ‘Forrest Gump’ and ‘Snotty Gobble’ should do the trick!
Of course, there are thousands of amazing destinations to explore by bike – so get out there and start exploring!
